Why Wait Until 2013?
By Kinsey Miller and Laura Hubbard
Laura Hubbard and I found ourselves comparing the home described in this article to watching ‘Back to the Future Part II’ for the first time. The Digital Home of 2013 also made us think about all of the technology we hope to have installed in our 2013 home. Our future list could go on and on, but there are a lot of features of the 2013 home, like automated home control, that are available now.
We both would enjoy the ability to program lighting, heating/cooling, TVs, audio, garage doors and even a security system with one control. We look forward to walking into or out of a room in our house and having the lights automatically turn on or off. Furthermore, we cannot wait for the day to reduce our energy consumption and lower our bills – sure we’re “green” and like to be environmentally conscious but were also young which by default makes us search for ways to save money - automated home controls not only simplify life, but can also save money.
Here are some of the items that top our list…
Kinsey - Walking through my house last night, I counted eight different remotes that control anything from the TV to the AC. The lights in my house make my living room a danger zone! I have to walk across the entire room to turn on a light which usually causes me to stub my toe, or trip on a shoe (note: the lamp placement was made after my brief stint with feng shui books….and I can’t change it now). Automatic lighting would simplify my life and reduce minor injuries all while saving money, and energy.
Laura - My wish list includes motorized shades programmed to go down during peak sun hours, a thermostat set to decrease/increase at certain times during the day and the same automatic lighting that would keep Kinsey from risking her life every time she comes home!
To us the 2013 home equals a simpler, greener, more cost effective way to live and we’re all about all that.
