Today’s launch day of CEA’s “America Wins With Trade” tour continued with a 2 p.m. event in front of J&R, the electronics superstore in the heart of lower Manhattan.  J&R CEO Rachelle Friedman welcomed her fellow New Yorkers, the press, and visiting dignitaries from the embassies of Columbia, Korea, Canada, and others to New York City, and talked about the vital importance of free trade to consumer electronics retailers and their customers.  J&R is a legend in retailing in NYC and was one of the first lower Manhattan businesses to reopen following the horrible events of 9/11.

The crowd swelled as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg arrived to speak in front of the CEA bus.  Mayor Bloomberg spoke eloquently of how free trade policies are driving our nation’s economic growth, and how the consumer electronics industry – responsible for some 300,000 jobs in New York City alone – is vital to this city’s economy.  He also cautioned against adherence to isolationists who would shut off U.S. manufacturers’ access to overseas markets, which would cost jobs and further harm our economy. Mayor Bloomberg applauded CEA and its member companies for this new nationwide educational campaign that will help all Americans understand the benefits of trade.

We are excited and proud that Mayor Bloomberg joined us at this event today — it certainly bodes well for the success of our tour across the country.
