The technology President
November 24, 2008 |On November 4th, America’s lengthiest Presidential campaign ended as Barack Obama won an electoral vote victory of 365 to 173. This election was historic on many levels, including the unprecedented way in which technology was used to organize and communicate with supporters. In a way, the Obama campaign was the most successful tech start-up of 2008.
The President-elect is of an age where technology has been part of his daily life. He uses the Internet, appears to be physically attached to his Blackberry, and perhaps he has even made mix CDs for his friends. We expect high tech issues will play a prominent role in his administration, beginning with the addition of our first national Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
Next year offers exciting opportunities to work with the new administration on expanding broadband access and creating a national framework for electronics recycling. At the same time, challenges remain in the area of free trade and ensuring passage of free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.
The consumer electronics industry is thankful to have friends on both sides of the aisle who understand the importance of innovation and competitiveness. We look forward to working with the new administration and the 111th Congress to achieve these important goals.
