A Helping Hand for Mother’s Day

How do you plan to show your appreciation for Mom this Mother’s Day? Hugs, flowers, and chocolate are the traditional gifts, but is there something else she may want?

A few years ago, CEA found that nearly a third of moms would like electronics for Mother’s Day. To take a closer look at Mother’s Day wish lists, we asked folks on the National Mall in Washington, DC to tell us what they are getting Mom, and asked mothers what they want.

Wish lists included everything from iPods to laptops, but our videos also reveal a simpler gift idea: that of a helping hand. Asked specifically about the DTV transition, many people realized their mothers might not be ready for the June 12 switch to digital TV signals. So be sure to ask your mom if she’s prepared. You can help her by getting a DTV converter box coupon or by helping her connect the converter box to her TV. And if she’s already DTV ready, why not show her how to do something new on a gadget she already owns?

My mother has long been prepared for the transition because my father got the DTV coupon as soon as it was available. Mom is now happily watching her favorite shows, such as Extreme Makeover, in digital format. So I’m thinking of getting her something else this Mother’s Day: a Roomba. She mentioned she wanted one just last weekend. I was surprised at first, but then I gave it some thought. Her current vacuum cleaner probably qualifies as an antique, and the fur output from her two cats keep her busy cleaning. So I think this will be a little helping hand that she (and the cats) will enjoy.

My favorite line from the video: “I’m gonna get her the box”. What a good son.
