CEA today launched the “Apps for Innovation” contest to encourage the most talented software developers to develop and deploy apps that illuminate how innovation and entrepreneurial activity are at work across America. The contest is part of the Innovation Movement, a grassroots campaign to mobilize Americans in support of public policies such as broadband, alternative energies and international trade that will play a key role in the global economic recovery and U.S. job creation.

Software developers are encouraged to create and submit apps that do one of two things – 1) illuminate, perhaps through government data, how innovation and entrepreneurial activity are at work across America or, 2) help the Innovation Movement coalition advance its policy goals.

Possible apps could be a mash-up that overlays publicly available Federal Communications Commission broadband data across a Google Map to show the need for broadband deployment in rural areas, or an app that lets people better interact with a member of Congress. The contest is open to apps for any type of device or any type of Web platform.

The contest is now accepting submissions and will run through November 6.  Winners will be announced on November 10 at the CES New York Press Preview featuring CES Unveiled @ NY, held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City.

The Grand Prize developer will receive $10,000 AND a trip to the International CES in January. But the prizes don’t stop there — the second place app will receive $5,000 and the third place app receives $3,500.  Team submissions are welcome; we just ask that you pick a team leader who will receive the prize on your team’s behalf.
