Sight CE-ing in Moscow And St. Petersburg

This summer, I took a vacation to Russia. I visited one of my college buddies while I was staying in Moscow, and I took an overnight train to St. Petersburg. Russia is just one of those places I always wanted to visit, but never had the reason. Kevin gave me the reason (he’s there with the Department of State for at least two years) and American Airlines gave me the ticket (I do enjoy using my miles).

Before I left, the Queen of Blogs asked me to blog about my trip. I told her that I wasn’t sure as this was my vacation and I didn’t really want to think about work or consumer electronics while I was there. Of course, I could have taken the easy route and written a blog about the devices that I took with me that I couldn’t live without when I’m travelling. But, I think that’s been done (and, if you’re interested, I need to have my camera and my portable media player. Kevin lent me a pre-paid cell phone that came in handy as well).

So, here is my photo blog about why I couldn’t even spend my vacation time without thinking about consumer electronics. These pictures don’t even begin to capture the fact that so many surfaces in Russia (more so even in Moscow than St. Pete) are covered with advertisements and many of those advertisements are for CE equipment or companies.

This Canon sign guided me through Moscow. Seriously, it was right outside of the Metro stop that I used to get back to my friend’s flat, and you could see it from everywhere. Thanks, Canon!

The entrance to Red Square is to the left of this photo, and the Samsung sign was HUGE!

This is the same Samsung sign, but, this time as viewed from right inside the Kremlin gates.

P7072478 The Hitachi sign was across the square from the Canon sign. In the middle of the square was the last statue of Lenin that was erected in Moscow. I couldn’t help but wonder how Lenin would feel about sharing space with signs from companies that are clearly in the free market economy.

Mr. Lenin, who was dwarfed by the Canon and Hitachi signs.

Here you can see the bottom of the Lenin statue with a JVC bus in front of it.
